  1. Wood is the hard tissue beneath the bark of 
  2. many perennial plants. It is composed of 
  3. water-conducting cells, or secondary xylem, 
  4. and gains its hardness and strength from 
  5. deposits of lignin. Hardwoods, such as oak, 
  6. and softwoods, such as pine, have commercial 
  7. value as structural material and for 
  8. furniture. The central wood in a branch or 
  9. stem is known as heartwood and is generally 
  10. darker and harder than the outer wood.
